Development department of EOC-DICAC has been implementing health, projects on nutrition promotion, and routine as well as supplemental immunization and polio projects in the country. These, projects targeted unreached populations particularly those who reside in remote, underserved and inaccessible areas of the country and are exposed to natural as well as manmade disasters

 

Taking into account the important roles of stakeholders, the department uses four entry points for the implementation of health and nutrition projects .These entry points include: religious leaders, political leaders, and the health system and schools and school clubs.

 

In all the projects, the department extensively uses opportunity of the church’s human resources i.e. enlightened religious leaders (clergies) after providing pertinent technical trainings. To enable it effectively address followers of other faith groups the department involves religious leaders of other faiths. Religious leaders live within the community and are trusted and highly accepted by the respective followers. Moreover, the involvement of political leaders, beneficiaries, Health Extension Workers, Women development armies and health offices throughout the project cycle enabled EOC-DICAC to strengthen and increase the sustainability of project outputs.

 

1. Immunization projects

Polio Project

The Kelem Wollega polio project is the other project under the development department that has just been commenced in 2012 in Kelem Wolega zone of Oromia regional state, which is financed by USAID through CCRDA CORE Group Ethiopia. The objective of the project is to improve the coverage and quality of immunization and the cold chain system and thereby contribute towards the National Polio Eradication Initiative.

 

Clergy mobilization on immunization project

The Clergy Mobilization on Immunization Project is one of the projects aiming at increasing the awareness level of the community on immunization and utilization of immunization services in order to prevent and reduce the prevalence of the vaccine preventable diseases. The commission received appreciations by local governments for the very high accomplishment via trained clergies. This project is being implemented science 2009 in 11 Woredas/districts of Amhara regional state with the financial support of GAVI (Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunization), Geneva, through Federal Ministry of Health.

2. Nutrition and other health projects

Scaling-up community based complementary food Production Project

In April 2013 EOC –DICAC signed a two year (2013/14-2014/15) project entitled “Scaling up Community based production of Complementary Food” with UNICEF. The project will be implemented in five Woredas of Tigray regional state (Seharti Samre, Kilte Awlaelo, Endemekoni, Atsbi/Wonberta and Adwa Woredas of South Eastern; Eastern, Southern and Central zones) and five Woredas of Amhara regional state (Machakel, Awabel, Baso Liben, Sekela & Bure woredas of East and West Gojam zones) .Through the execution of this project it is expected to benefit 18,900 children 6 to 24 months old directly and 450,000 population indirectly.

The goal of the project is to contribute to the reduction of the prevalence of underweight and consequently reduce the under-five mortality rate and achieve the MDG 1 and 4 by 2015, through supporting the existing community based nutrition program of the government and scaling up the community based production of complementary food (CF) in five Woredas in Tigray and five Woredas in Amhara regions and further scale up to more Woredas based on the lessons from the implementation of the project. The objective of the project is to promote and expand Community based production of complementary food to improve the nutritional status of under two children in ten selected Woredas of Tigray and Amhara regional states. The major activities of the project include:

  • production of complementary food for children 6 to 24 months
  • Increasing the knowledge of mothers in the preparation of complementary food through sensitization of mothers and Woreda cabinets on the need of complementary food,
  • Training of mothers who have children 6 to 24 months old and HDAs on child feeding practices and
  • Training of women group, Health Extension Workers, religious leaders and Health Development Armies on nutrition in general and preparation of complementary food in particular.

The project mainly uses women group and will be led by women association with close support of the respective Woreda health offices. Among other stakeholders the project plans to involve target communities, concerned government sector offices and Universities .Based on the lessons learnt from this project,EOC-DICAC and UNICEF intends to scale up to more Woredas.

Infant and young children feeding (IYCF) Project

The Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) project was commenced in August 2011 with the objective of improving the nutritional status of children under -24 months of age and it is on the second year of its implementation period. The project promotes feeding of children aged from birth to 2nd year of life focusing on seven excellent actions:

  • start breast feeding within an hour of birth,
  • feed only breast milk until six months of age,
  • start giving soft and thick porridge when the baby is six months old,
  • add highly nutritious food items (egg, milk and meat) in the porridge, feed at least three times per day at six months of age,
  • father’s participation in preparation and feeding of children and
  • Increase breast feeding and giving complementary food when the baby is sick.

This project emphasizes on the exclusive breast feeding of infants until six months of age and initiation of complementary feeding at six months from locally available food items prepared in a way that is suitable for the growth and development of children. The project is being implemented in 6 Woredas/districts of Amhara (Dembia, Gonder-Zuria and Wogera districts) and Tigray (Atsbi, Hintalo-Wajirat and Enderta districts) regional states.
