Youth Engagement to Combat Gender-Based Violence
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
As part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Development and Inter-Church Aid Commission (EOTC-DICAC), in collaboration with the Addis Ababa University (AAU) Faculty of Social Studies, organized a capacity-building workshop focusing on Youth Engagement to Combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Ethiopia.
The event brought together students from various departments across the university who expressed strong interest in understanding the role of faith institutions, youth leadership, and community participation in addressing GBV.
Dr. Gudina Abashula delivered an in-depth training session that explored the root causes of gender-based violence, the importance of prevention through value-based education, and role of youth in promoting dignity and equality. Participants engaged actively, raising questions and sharing reflections on how university youth can contribute to safer and more inclusive communities.
The workshop also included an open discussion segment where students and facilitators exchanged perspectives on strengthening collaboration between academic institutions in the fight against GBV.
As part of the closing program, a candle-lighting ceremony was held to honor survivors of gender-based violence and to symbolize collective commitment to ending all forms of abuse.
Organizers emphasized that empowering young people through dialogue, awareness, and value-based engagement is a vital step toward building a future free from gender-based violence in Ethiopia.
